Welcome

friendsWelcome

A Place of My Own has been teaching children in Napa for over 30 years. We welcome children ages 2 and up and do not require them to be toilet trained. Children are placed in age-appropriate classrooms for “class time” each day as well as have the opportunity to play with all ages (2-6) during play times held both inside and outside.

Philosophy

Our program is designed to develop a child’s sense of independence and responsibility. We provide a developmentally appropriate program that provides your child with an environment for success. At APOMO, we encourage our children to learn through play. When your child is here, we want him/her to get dirty! We believe that your child learns best about the environment, making friends and working cooperatively when they are provided with the opportunity to play indoors and outdoors.

We believe the strength of our program lies in the dedication of our staff. We seek out well educated and experienced teachers with a passion for working with young children. Each staff member has unique strengths and abilities that form a community to meet the individual needs of each child, we want to work with you to make sure your child grows and learns in the best possible way!

Curriculum & Daily Routine

We spend our morning (roughly 8:30-11:00) divided into classroom groups for traditional preschool time. The children in each group may range in age but their skills are such that they are compatible.  We do regular evaluations on all children and when necessary children are moved to the next group. During class time the children will have a chance to play outside, have a snack (parent provided), circle time for songs and stories, play inside classroom centers, and participate in art projects around monthly themes relating to the time of year, children’s interests, and holidays. Our Yellow Ducks are children ages 2-3½ and the Red Birds are 3 & 4-year-olds. We currently have two classrooms for children going on to kindergarten or TK the next school year; the Brown Bears and the Green Frogs.  To prepare children for kindergarten we use a curriculum called “Get Set for School”. It covers three core areas that lead to kindergarten readiness: reading and writing, language and literacy, and numbers and math. The curriculum is set up in a way that gives the children the opportunity to interact with each other, ask questions and encourage exploration. It is not a kindergarten boot camp, but a program designed specifically for the needs of preschoolers.

Parents provide lunch (about 11:45) and enough food for the child to choose a morning and afternoon snack. Our half day children go home by 12:30 and all children who are full day will have a rest period from 12:30-2:00, parents provide a sheet & blanket. After rest time the children will play together inside and outside and have an afternoon snack (parent provided) at about 3:00. Most of our afternoon is spent together in mixed age groups. One of the advantages of mixed age groups is that each child can seek out his own level, his own speed, his own interests. He can interact with children who are developing the same skills or who have already mastered the skills in which he is working toward. Each child has the opportunity to receive help from others as needed and may act as the helper in return. Thus, the environment provides for the child to act as both learner and teacher.

Children who are not yet toilet trained are welcome, parents bring the diapers we provide the wipes. When it comes to potty training we have found there is a BIG difference between Ready and Curious! All the curiosity in the world will not prepare a child for successful potty training unless they are showing multiple readiness signs. As children begin showing the signs of readiness we can work with you and assist with potty training by offering extra reminders.

How do young children learn most effectively?super

Studies have indicated that young children learn best when they:

  • Actively participate
  • Work at their own pace and in their own style
  • Talk with each other
  • Use real, authentic objects
  • Follow their natural curiosity
  • Experiment to find solutions to their own real problems
  • Choose what they want to do
  • LEARN THROUGH PLAY

Our Center

APOMO is a 501(c) non-profit organization and is run by an Executive Director and parent Board of Directors. We hold monthly Board Meetings and parents are encouraged to attend as we appreciate their input.

Our Staff

Our staff is educated in early childhood and are committed to offering individual emotional support and guidance to your child. We also support our teachers through ongoing education and training opportunities. We provide them with resources and give them the freedom to create a unique learning environment for your child. Because of all these things our staff turnover rate is very low.

Our teachers spend their time listening to, playing with, and talking to your children. They are patient when your child needs help or when they need some extra attention (such as when a new child is adjusting to the center).

Our Board of Directors

We are a non-profit 501(c)  organization which is run by a parent/community Board of Directors. The Board is committed to seeing that A Place Of My Own is operated according to the policies set forth in our by-laws and the guidelines set forth by the state. We encourage your participation.

Parents

Parents are the most important adults in a child’s life. We strongly encourage you to become involved in your child’s education. You are your child’s first and most important teacher. It is because of this that we depend on personal parent participation of our APOMO families.  We require 5 hours minimum of parent participation. Whether it be flipping burgers at our annual fundraiser, planting in our garden, or donating supplies, we appreciate your support! We value your time and we want to use it wisely if you CANNOT participate a minimum of 5 hours we do offer a yearly OPT-OUT fee of $100.

Call us today to set up a time to tour our school! We know you will be glad you did!
